Our Story

Camp Ursa

Named for the Great Bear
The Beginning

A Clearing in the Old-Growth

Camp Ursa was founded on a simple conviction: that the most profound luxury is not thread counts or crystal stemware โ€” it is the sound of a forest at 3am, the stillness of a lake surface at first light, and the feeling of being utterly, completely alone in the wild.

Situated along the glacial edge of Johnson Pond deep inside the Adirondack Park in North Hudson, New York, our property is surrounded by the ancient forests and mountains of the largest protected wilderness area in the lower 48 states. The pond, carved by glaciers over ten thousand years ago, now holds largemouth bass, great blue herons, river otters, and the reflections of ten thousand stars.

The Name

Ursa: The Great Bear

Ursa Major โ€” the Great Bear constellation โ€” is one of the most recognizable formations in the northern sky. For millennia, it has served as a celestial compass, guiding travelers through uncharted wilderness. It is visible directly above Johnson Pond on a clear night.

We named our camp for this ancient navigator because we believe every person who arrives at Camp Ursa arrives searching for something โ€” a direction, a stillness, a return to themselves.
